MIAMI - A large fiberglass panel tore off a Boeing 747 jetliner Friday and landed in a shopping mall parking lot as the plane was approaching the Miami airport, officials said.

Investigators now are checking out the aircraft, a cargo plane operated by Atlas Airlines.

According to officials, the fiberglass panel measures about 17 to 18 feet long. It tore loose from the 747 as it was approaching the runway at Miami International Airport on a flight from Santiago, Chile.

The panel did not hit anyone or cause any property damage. The aircraft was able to land safely.

There was no immediate word on what caused the panel to fall off the plane or what part of the aircraft it came from.

An investigation continues.
