Japan Airlines reports new fuel leak in Boeing 787

TOKYO (AP) - Japan Airlines has reported a fuel leak in a Boeing 787 Dreamliner for the second time in a week amid a U.S. safety review of the aircraft.
Narita International Airport outside of Tokyo says JAL reported a 100-liter fuel leak in a 787 during an inspection Sunday. The aircraft reportedly was the same one that had a fuel leak in Boston last week.
Japan's All Nippon Airways has experienced a fuel leak, a cockpit window crack and a computer malfunctioning in its 787s, causing cancelations of several domestic flights.
The U.S. government said Friday the 787 is safe to fly, though it launched a probe last week into the cause of various problems.
The 787 is Boeing's newest and most high-tech airliner. Japanese airlines are among the top 787 customers.

This is more about how fast news moves now and not about an abnormal amount of issues of a newly released jet airliner. I would bet that it is completely in line with other releases in Boeings past maybe even fewer. However we are all so quick to rip down people and companies that are perceived to have "more" than we do.
Like watching an asteroid heading for earth, there is very little that can be done, and is assured mass destruction
NEW!! Really!!! Another one?? Is this some kind of sick joke???
Japan Airlines???
How long will they ask...that is the Boeing Co ask for forgiveness before one of these falls from the sky?
DESIGN DESIGN DESIGN...........This is the issue not nut's bolt's and screws!! There should have been a Mock up in Everett FIRST, just like every plane invented and designed. Computerized is something that cannot work...Boeing is fixing millions of parts as it is because they're being made by by who knows who in what part of the country no one knows!!!
Cheap labor I guess!!
The experience seems to be in Washington State.
LISTEN EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE!! YOU MIGHT LEARN SOMETHING!!!
Â
Are these the ones made in South Carolina?
@Alikelystorey These are the ones that are made from plants and suppliers all around the country. Boeing's first truly outsourced airline, and the results are in.
You know its really bad when the company employees are saying they wouldnt fly on that plane !
$14:00 per hour job done in S.C.,that's what Boeing get !
Even if this whole program not making profits,those Jackass CEOs still
can collect big bonuses from the company anyway.
 @scychan I'm pretty sure the first batch of Nippon planes were made in Everett... Although I could be wrong.
@scychan You realize these problems have absolutely nothing to do with South Carolina's work force right.
 @Couscous  @scychan some of those S.C.mechanics
and managers were up here for training don't forget though.
First off can all the children please stop with the SC vs Everett assembled 787 rhetoric? It's a new plane, with parts built and delivered from several different countries, and with different oversight QC. I personally don't think it was a good idea to outsource in such a fashion because you have problems like this emerge. The planes are just now being delivered in a regularly scheduled production sense, and for the first time since development. ALL new products will have small issues that require second looks and fixing. The fire was the biggest concern and is what sparked the FAA looking into it further to make sure that particular problem is permanently solved. That's the bottom line.
Â
Yes some union people are lazy. Yes SC can build planes just fine. YES WE CAN BOTH BUILD THEM. Grow up.
The majority of these problems derived from quality control, from day 1...
Sections of the plane are built all over the world. Wings come from Japan, I am not sure which sections come from Italy, Australia, India, but one thing is certain,... Boeing will get mentioned for everything that happens, whether or not it is related to maintenance.
Keep in mind, that when these parts come in, they are ready to do the final hookup to the next section. In the case of the wings, all the fuel lines are already installed..
Wings are built by by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, in Japan.
Its just way too funny to read the comments posted here..... sounds to me like the folks who are making the comments that imply that these problems with the 787 are the result of poor work from non-union folks are union folks. Typical. I guess union employees @ Boeing NEVER do shoddy work. It's always someone else who dooes; non-union employees, outsourced work, etc. I thought you union folks are all on the same team. I also wonder how you ascertain this flawed aircraft were built by non-union employees-Boeing employees. D bags.
Love that "right to work" uneducated non-union SC labor! They sure do make great stuff!Â
 @NWCoin The planes were built in Everett genius. But you are correct in the fact that they do build great planes in SC as does all of Boeing...

 @the unvarnished truth  @roland that's the problem
 @roland No it was built in SC smart guy.
@NWCoin @roland Smart guy is not something you can call yourself, since the planes were not built in one single state.
 @NWCoin There have only been 4 planes delivered to Air India that were built/assembled in SC.... All the planes mentioned in this article were 'assembled' in Everett...
 @NWCoin No stupid, it is built all over the world and then the final assembly of the fabricated parts are assembled here.
Â
Thats the problem with "Rat Labor', they just cant seem to learn or comprehend the obvious.
 @roland The planes are built non union all over China not the US.
 @T_BONE_WALKER  @roland China ?
Boeing has to send some Engineers to China for more
advance Training while ago...that part you just don't know !
probably just those wacky union boys sticking it to the man.

Just a layman's opinion, but stress and flexing seem to be main components when airplanes fly...the considerations for flexing may well be contributing to these failures. That's the only thing I can think of that would contribute to a cracked windshield, since the windshields are supposedly manufactured for all the airliners by the same company, that would be the surfaces around it weakening due to flex under pressure. The tensil strength of the composite material itself may be sufficient but under load, materials react to heat, cold and pressure differently.
It seems pretty strange that the same aircraft would have another leak. The article didn't say if the leak was the result of an improper repair or a leak in some other area or component. I would think that this particular aircraft will be taken out of service until such time that the entire fuel system is inspected.Â
Â
Maybe the FAA should require that JAL no longer fly this aircraft into US airspace until it passes an inspection by JAL, Boeing, and the FAA.
Humm, so the non union planes built are fine so far, interesting...
@Windowseat This aircraft was built in Puget Sound. It is not one of the Charleston units.

"The U.S. government said Friday the 787 is safe to fly, though it launched a probe last week into the cause of various problems." I talked to an old engineer friend of mine who's been at Boeing for over 35 years, and he told me he probably wouldn't get on one of the new planes. The reason? All of the lazy, just out of high school, kids that work there who want the big paycheck, but have no work ethic or pride in what they do. When one of their own engineers won't fly on a Boeing plane, makes ME a little hesitant to get on one.
 @Wolfen And what about all the people who do the hundreds of test flights? I personally know several of them, and they have not had any issues flying on the 787. Actually, at least at the site where I work at, there are more old folks that are retired in place than young kids out of high school or college. And it's typically the retired in place folks that we (the engineers) have the most issues with.

 @the unvarnished truth  @WolfenNew hire Boeing Assembly Mechanics start at $15.00/hr and higher + benefits, with max over $30.00+/hr after 6yrs!!!! It's good pay for someone starting out who doesn't know how to drill holes correctly, turn a nut, rivet, nor install wiring and plumbing.
Boeing can't seem to catch a break. Looks like they didn't get first leak fixed correctly.

When it rains it pours (fuel)
Not to cast aspersions, but were these built in SC?
@John Bailo: No, JAL's 787s were one of the first ones built in Everett.
 @John Bailo No, all the problem planes have been built in Everett. SC has only delivered 4 planes to Air India which have reported no issues...

 @Brett Jeffery  @roland  @John Bailo Not! Everett assembled many of the planes, before South Carolina assembled a one. During the assembly and test flight of the first planes many of the issues/problems are find.
Â
Boeing used to keep all the manufacturing processes in-house until the problems/issues got solved then would off-load the work. Boeing didn't do that with the 787, due to that Boeing has kindalost control of the manufacturing processes by having their vendors solve the problems on what they manufacture for assembly being done at Boeing.
   @roland  @John Bailo Â
Yeah Yeah Yeah we got it the first time """"Very little of the 787 is made by union folks. Most of it is built outside of the US """" there we have it one more time.Â
it seems that the SC  planes have not had the problems the Everett  ASSEMBLED planes have had. Maybe while Everett is worried about what SC is doing SC has cleaned your clocks.Â
