State expanding 'Cash for Clunker' appliance program

State expanding 'Cash for Clunker' appliance program
OLYMPIA -- The state has expanded its "Cash for Clunker" appliance program, which makes federal money available to people who buy certain energy efficient appliances.

Washington has $5.5 million to give away but since the program started, it's only used $1.2 million of that rebate money.

So now, the program is being expanded from just high-efficiency washing machines and refrigerators to qualifying Energy Star dishwashers, heat pumps water heaters, gas water heaters, gas tankless water heaters, and ductless heat pumps. These major appliances must be installed by a licensed contractor.

The rebates remain on refrigerators and clothes washers, but the washing machine rebate gets boosted from $100 to $150.

If you already took advantage of the Cash for Clunker appliance program and got $100 back for the washing machine you bought, expect to get a check for another $50.
