So what will it be -- a plasma or LCD TV? That's the decision most people in the market for a new, state-of-the-art television will need to make.
Flat panel screens are getting bigger and cheaper. In its November issue, Consumer Reports says the picture quality for both plasma and LCD sets is "better than ever."
Plasma sets deliver deep black levels and high contrast. They look good from almost any angle -- important if a number of people are in the room watching.
Consumer Reports says most LCD sets look their best from a limited sweet spot in front of the screen.
Think LCD if the set will be in a very bright room. That's because LCDs have a brighter picture than most plasma sets and their screens reflect less. An LCD is also a good choice for anyone who plays a lot of video games because static images won't burn in.
Consumer Reports says there is nothing to stories that plasma sets have a short life span. The editors predict both types of sets should last a good 10 years or more in normal use.
You will get more bang for your buck with a plasma TV; the same money will buy you a bigger screen.
