Help save your life, for just $1

Help save your life, for just $1

By Herb Weisbaum

SEATTLE -- It's a super-sized pill vial, but there aren't any pills inside.

This is the vial of life -- and it holds information about your medical history -- information that could save your life in an emergency.

"You can put information on your medical conditions, any allergies, any current medications that you're on," says Jan Sprake, Executive Director of the Medic One Foundation.

"The concept is to have something that can speak for you if you're unable to speak for yourself when the firefighters or the paramedics show up at your home in response to a life-threatening emergency."

The kit comes with a sticker to put on your front door or window and a magnet for your refrigerator. Emergency crews around here know to look for that.

Why the fridge?

"Well, the refrigerator is the common place in a home, instead of saying maybe the medicine cabinet or kitchen cabinet. It's just a common place that virtually everyone has in their home," Sprake said.

Inside your fridge is also more likely to survive a flood or fire.

You can get a Vial of Life at any Bartell Drug store. It's just $1.00 and about 50% goes to the Medic One Foundation to support research and the paramedic training program.
