Store brands an easy way to save

Store brands an easy way to save

By Herb Weisbaum

Food prices are going up and there's no end in sight. How do you save money at the grocery store?

Phil Lempert, the Supermarket Guru, says think store brands.

"Keep in mind that on the typical store brand you're going to save 20 to 30 percent. And also, most of the store brands today have money back guarantees on them. So it's a great thing to try and if you don't like it, bring it back."

Lempert says frozen food tends to be a good value, especially for fruits and vegetables that are out of season. But are they as good as fresh?

"When it comes to frozen foods, these products have been packed at the peak of freshness. So whether it's a chicken tender, a turkey dinner, or frozen blueberries, these products are actually going to taste better and have more nutritive power in them than their free counterparts."

Another money-saving tip: Always have a list.

"Because surveys have shown us that if you don't have a shopping list you are going to spend about 40 percent more on impulse items."
