SEATTLE -- Thousands of outdoor decks in Washington state need to be inspected, as they could have been built with inferior materials.

Louisiana-Pacific Corporation issued the alert Thursday morning that some deck boards and railings, sold under the WeatherBest, ABTco, and Veranda brand names, can fail prematurely and break.

"This concerns us even though we received claims of premature deterioration on just a small portion of this product," said Rick Olszewski with Louisiana-Pacific Corporation.

The composite deck boards and railings look similar to natural wood, and they come in several colors.

The products were made at the Louisiana-Pacific plant in Meridian, Idaho and sold at building products stores after January 1, 2005.

If your deck was built with LP's WeatherBest, Veranda or ABTco brand decking, you should inspect the deck immediately.

"The deterioration that you would be looking for may be visible cracking on the surface of the products or it could be flaking on the surface of the product that looks out of the ordinary," Olszewski said.

Veranda decking is made by several manufacturers, only the boards made by Louisiana-Pacific are affected by this consumer advisory.

Even if you do not see any signs of deterioration or cracking, Louisiana-Pacific wants you to contact them to arrange for a free inspection. The site to go to is www.deckingnotice.com

LP says if the inspection turns up premature deterioration, it will "remedy the problem, up to the replacement of the entire deck, if needed."
