Neck and foot pain can be defeated

Nagging neck or foot pain may not be serious, but it can sure put a damper on your summer.
And neck pain can be caused by something as simple as keeping up with your e-mail. "Neck pain from working at the computer is one of those aches that a lot of us have, but a recent study found that you can reduce the pain by doing strength training exercises that specifically target the neck and shoulder muscles," says Nikki Carasone, general manager of a health club that sees many people with this problem. "At home, you can start with some basic stretches. You can start by doing an ear to shoulder stretch to each side, nice and slow, and you can look over each shoulder, being careful not to go beyond the shoulder joint. "If you want to add some strength training exercises, you can take some two- or three-pound weights in front of you, up, nice soft elbows, or out to the side, not going beyond the shoulder joint, two to three sets of twelve, two to three days a week." If your heel hurts so much you have trouble walking, you may have plantar fasciitis. "Too much high-impact exercise could be the culprit," says Toni Hope of Good Housekeeping. "Switch to a lower-impact activity, like biking or swimming. Another tip - wear shoes with a good, thick sole support." Good Housekeeping also recommends wrapping an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas in a towel as a quick way to zap your little aches and pains. And then keep it on the tender area, but not for more than 20 minutes at a time. Something else to remember: If you take over-the-counter pills for aches or pains and after three days they are not helping - or you still need them after 10 days - it's time to see your doctor. |
