New school year is good for organizing kids' bedrooms

With a new school year right around the corner, it's a great time for moms and dads to get their kids' bedrooms organized.
And the good part is - you don't need to spend a lot to do it. One inexpensive way to get rid of the mess in a stress-free way is to use kid-friendly organizers and systems. "For all the pictures and notes that the child collects, what we did was cut a piece of plexiglas and we just simply put it on top of their desk," says Andie Huber, editor of Good Housekeeping. "That way, they can take their pictures and their notes and slip them underneath. The great thing about plexiglas is that it's safer than glass and its inexpensive." Another handy organizer is a lidded basket. "This lidded basket from Ten Thousand Villages is perfect for kids because its large enough to hold a significant amount of clothes," Huber says, "but it also has a lid so you get to cover up and don't see a mess on the floor every day." And here's another idea from Good Housekeeping: "We've repurposed this over-the-door shoe bag," Huber says. "We put some of the child's favorite items that she uses on a daily basis. instead of sticking them in a drawer or hiding them in bins and baskets, this way she can see her objects, grab them, and go." Good Housekeeping also recommends not throwing out any of your kid's toys or clothing unless you ask first. You might not realize he or she has a sentimental attachment to something. Now, if you can't get your child to get rid of anything - explain that donating used clothes or toys can help needy kids. For more information on this topic from Good Housekeeping, click here. |
