Sack the brown sacks: Bags that help protect your lunch from germs

By Good Housekeeping

It's the last week in August, time to start thinking about packing school lunches again.

To keep food inside safe, you need to give your child the right lunch bag. The Good Housekeeping Research Institute put a bunch of bags to the test to find out which ones make the grade.

Here's one way to start the school year off right. Replace your child's brown bag lunch with a lunch bag that helps keep the food safe from germs.

"Its really important to make sure the food that you pack is well-chilled before you pack it and that you include at least one or two small ice packs," said Sharon Franke, the director of the institute's Kitchen Appliances & Technology Department. "We tested 26 and we found that the best ones kept food cold at refrigerated temperatures for between two and three hours."

Good Housekeeping says the L.L. Bean Flip Top Lunch Box is a good choice for keeping food safe.

"It has leather compartments which helps you organize the food. It even has a little compartment on the outside where you can tuck in a pen," Franke said.

The Built Tortuga is made of neoprene. Good Housekeeping says it will appeal to older children.

Good Housekeeping recommends the Wall-E Triangle Lunch Tote for little kids. It has a separate zipper pouch to keep sandwiches from being squished. And at $10, it's half the price of the other winners.

By the way, all these lunch bags are new for the 2008 school year, so your child won't have to worry about carrying around last year's model.

And remember, whatever bag you use, it's a good idea to include ice packs and pre-chilled beverages.
