Best-tasting frozen fruit bars
By Good Housekeeping
During the dog days of summer -or even on a rainy day - a frozen fruit bar can really hit the spot. These low-calorie bars are a year-round treat.
So which pops are tops? The Good Housekeeping research Institute decided to find out. Frozen fruit bars are generally low in calories and refreshing. But the taste? Well, that depends. Samantha Seneviratne with the institute put eight nationally-available frozen fruit bars to the test. "We had 15 volunteers come in and taste strawberry fruit bars, the most popular flavor," she said. Here's the favorite: Chunks O' Fruiti Gourmet Fruit Bars. "The first ingredient listed is strawberries, as opposed to some of our other samples where water comes first," said Seneviratne. "I really like this fruit bar because it has real chunks of strawberry in it and the texture is creamy and it's a little sweet, but not too sweet," one taster said. "I liked this one because it was creamy but it still tasted like i was eating fruit," another taster said. The Whole Foods Market 365 Frozen Fruit Bars came in a close second. Testers described their texture as "perfect and creamy." "I like this one because it tasted like the perfect mix of strawberry ice cream an also strawberry, (the) good-for-you kind of fruit," a taster said. Plus these fruit bars have no fat and no preservatives. We went looking for the Chunks O' Fruiti bars and discovered they're easy to find. They're mostly in smaller stores. Some of you may have to settle for the runner-up, which is also very good and made by the same company. These Whole Foods bars have about 100 calories. By comparison, the Haagen Dazs Brownie Bar has 360 calories. |
