Tasty foods that are also good for you

Potato leek soup

I spend a lot of time telling you about foods you might want to avoid because they're too fatty, too salty or loaded with calories.

So what, exactly, can you eat? The following products all got a thumbs up from the Nutrition Action Healthletter published by the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Amy's Organic Soup is light in sodium, but not in taste. A serving of Amy's Light has 290 mg -- half of the 580 mg in its regular minestrone and much lower than Campbell's Select, which has 950 mg of sodium. Each serving of Amy's soup has 90 calories and 3 grams of fiber.

Amy's Organic Chili is another good choice. Chili is a great way to get more beans, which means more fiber into your diet. But in most cases you get a ton of sodium and saturated fat.

But Amy's Organic Chili is meatless, so there's only 1 or 2 grams of fat. The black bean has 15 grams of fiber per cup. And if you get the light in sodium variety, you get the sodium down to around 340 mg per service, which isn't bad.

Uncle Ben's Ready Rice is whole-grain brown rice that cooks in just 90 seconds. You just squeeze, tear the top to vent and heat on high for 90 seconds.

100% Whole Grain Fig Newtons are a healthy yet tasty way to snack. The whole grain gives them a more flavor and character. Each cookie has about a gram of fiber and some fruit.

And yes, it's a cookie, not carrots. So each cookie has 50 calories each. But if you're going to have one anyway, might as well have whole grains.

Another tasty treat is the Kashi TLC Tasty Little Cookies. They're chewy and low in saturated fat with a nice dose of fiber and less sugar than regular cookies.

And they're made with ingredients that are good for you. The Center for Science in the Public Interest says, "You won't find healthier, yummier cookies" unless you make them yourself.
