This is such a wonderful time of year as long as you're indoors and out of the rain.

Decorating your home for the holidays can run up a sizable bill, but it doesn't have to. You can save by using the things you already own. Here are a few ideas from the editors at Good Housekeeping magazine.

Andie Huber, home editor at Good Housekeeping, knows with the current state of the economy, we're all looking for ways to save a little money.

"When it's time to put up your holiday decorations, try re-purposing items you may already have in your home," she said. "For example, take an unused bowl or vase and fill it with ornaments and bold color combinations."

Maybe you have some silver pieces lying around.

"Almost any silver piece can be re-purposed into chic holiday decor," said Huber. "You can take goblets and sugar bowls and showcase your pretty ornaments in them. You can take a silver cup that can hold pine branches and flowers, or you can group together some candles on a silver dish for added holiday sparkle."

You can even use an old hamper or a large basket to showcase your holiday presents.

"And remember, when it comes to holiday decorating, you don't need to go overboard. Sometimes less is more. Just a little added touch in a room is all you need," Huber said.

Here's another way to decorate with what you have. String together mismatched collectibles to make a garland. For instance, you might combine old teacups, unusual ornaments and toys with some greenery and a ribbon.

And consider displaying your holiday cards on an old shutter you have lying around. Hang the shutter on the wall using picture frame wire. Then slip the holiday cards into the slats of the shutter.
