Get yourself organized for that big Thanksgiving meal

Thanksgiving is now less than two weeks away, so now is the time to get organized. Good Housekeeping has some tips to take the stress out of Turkey Day.

Yes, preparing and serving the big Thanksgiving meal can be stressful. Advance planning can make things more enjoyable for you and your guests.

Sara Lyle, the magazine's lifestyles editor, says the first step is to clean out everything from your dining room that's not thanksgiving related.

"That includes all those catalogs you've been meaning to read, as well as any bowls or trays that you're not going to use on the big day," she said. "Next, you look at the menu that you're planning to make and you pull out all of the bake ware, the cookware, the serving ware and the utensils that you'll need. It's a good idea to put post-it notes on the each item as you go so you can see if you're short on anything."

And as for the food service, Lyle says serve smart.

"Make it easier for guests to help themselves to the food by providing utensils that only require one hand, like tongs," she said.

Be sure to have some backup supplies because things like napkins and utensils always get dropped or lost during the hustle and bustle of the meal.

"If you have a long table, add a set of salt and pepper shakers at about every four seats or at each end of the table. That way, they're within everyone's reach," said Lyle.

Refrigerator space is usually tight in the days leading up to the big day. To make more space, store things like salad or vegetables in big storage bags instead of big bowls.

And now is a good time to make sure you have enough containers to send home all of those wonderful leftovers.
