Think twice before filing an auto insurance claim
By Connie ThompsonCrashes on snow and ice are leaving hundreds of local drivers with pretty big bills at the body shop. But before you file a claim with your insurance company, make sure it's worth it. As strange as it sounds, in some cases, you may be better off leaving your insurance company out of it. No one plans on getting in a wreck when they left the house. But once the damage is done, don't assume your insurance policy will automatically cover the damage. A lot depends on how bad the damage is, and a lot depends on your policy. Before you file a claim:
Does the damage estimate exceed the deductible? That's important. Insurance companies don't just care about the amount of your claim; they also pay attention to the frequency of your claims. The more claims you make, the more likely your rates will go up. If the your repair bill is just a little higher than your deductible, you're probably better off leaving the insurance company out of it and paying the repair bill yourself. Also keep in mind that even if you don't file a claim, notifying your insurance company can still raise a red flag that your automobile has been in a crash. To be clear, the insurance companies do not discourage people from using their insurance. "Look at your policy as being there for large losses." advises Northwest Insurance Council spokesman Karl Newman. "We caution people to consider carefully before filing a claim that's just a little bit over your deductible." |
