Which wiper blades rated best?
By Herb Weisbaum
Windshield wipers don't last forever. In fact, a lot of us keep using the same blades for way too long.
Over time, sun, chemicals, dirt, even freezing temperatures break down the rubber. This happens even if you don't use your wipers very often. Old wiper blades are dangerous because they don't clean the window properly. They can smear the water, leave behind streaks, or just miss areas of the windshield. For its November issue, Consumer Reports tested 15 different wiper blades. Two models were top-rated: the Valeo 600 Series and the RainX Latitude. The editors named two other brands CR best buys: the Anco 31 Series and the Michelin RainForce. Consumer Reports tested six beam-blade models. These blades use a new design -- they don't have an external frame so they're supposed to do a better job. They also cost more, but the editors said they didn't see "a notable" advantage to using them. You don't have to spend a lot of money for new blades, but you do need to replace them regularly. Consumer Reports says its best to install new blades six to nine months of regular use. For More Information: Even good windshield wipers fade fast |
