Skimping on car maintenance could cost you big

Skimping on car maintenance could cost you big
In these tough economic times, people are cutting back in all sorts of ways. One thing you don't want to do is skimp on your car maintenance.

You know the old saying, pay me now or pay me a whole lot more later. It's true.

"When you hear that little squeak on your brakes and you go, 'I know that's brake pads but I'm just going to wait,' that $200 brake job may become a $2,000 break job," says Lauren Fix with the Car Care Council.

Fix says a lot of people are skimping on routine maintenance.

"Believe it or not 9 out of 10 cars on the road have something wrong with them."

April is National Car Care month, a time to focus attention on taking care of your vehicle -- the second largest investment most of us make.

So where should you go? Local repair shops specialize in value and convenience. Dealers can be more expensive, but you can always price shop before you have the work done.

Fix has this advice about using a quick oil change place:

"Please don't let them check your coolant or anything else. We've had many situations where people put the wrong product in. If they're just going to change your oil, that's all they should be doing."
