Windows 7 getting generally positive reviews
SEATTLE -- It's launch day for Windows 7.
Tech editors give the new software generally positive reviews. The new operating system has a clean look and it does a few cool new things.
For instance, the toolbar at the bottom of the screen makes it easy to access open windows and jump from one to another.
Jeff Fox, technology editor at Consumer Reports says Windows 7 is clearly better that Vista.
"It's not a drastic change," he said. " I think that they've just gotten rid of some of the things that irritated people and made some tweaks and improvements."
Windows 7 is snappier. At Kiplinger's Personal Finance, contributing writer Jeff Bertolucci says the improved speed is noticeable.
"It will load faster and it will close faster and also it may run programs a little faster," Bertolucci said.
One thing all the reviewers agree on -- Windows 7 is a lot less annoying than Vista.
If you're running Vista, it's fairly easy to upgrade to Windows 7. With XP, that's another story. Even if your machine can handle the new system, you have to do what's called a clean install.
USA Today's Ed Baig says that's a real pain.
"You actually have to wipe out the contents of your hard drive, files, programs, setting, etc., and after you install Windows 7 reinstall everything."
