Tips to weather the cold in your home
With the winter season soon upon us, it’s time to start thinking about how you’ll weather the cold.

A big concern most families have during the winter months, is energy consumption. One of the simplest things you can do to cut down on consumption is caulking.

Seal the gaps and cracks in any exterior walls or attics. And, here’s the key – make sure you use the right products.

Experts recommend using 100-percent silicone caulks, over acrylics, which can dry and crack. Sealing up your home can save you big bucks and headaches.

Another concern that often gets overlooked, is indoor air quality. Indoor air can be five times more polluted than outdoor air during the winter months. So what can you do? Try buying a whole house air cleaner. You can get one that fits right on your existing heating system.

Also, when you take your winter clothes and bedding out of storage, make sure you clean them well, to get rid of any allergens and particles. You can do that by washing them in a steam washer, if you have one.

If not, just wash at very high heat -- 130-degrees or higher is recommended.
