Heart disease is the number-one killer of women in this country.
"I think that all women are at risk for heart disease no matter how old they are," said cardiologist Dr. Nieca Goldberg. "And the younger you are, the better off you'll be if you start taking care of your heart.'
It's estimated that 60 percent of the women under forty have at least one high risk factor for heart diseases.
"It might be elevated cholesterol or excess weight, or they smoke. And this triples their odds of having a heart attack within the next 30 years," said Good Housekeeping's health director Toni Hope.
Women in their 30s should get a blood cholesterol test every five years.
In your 40s, schedule a stress echocardiogram or a nuclear imaging stress test to provide key warnings about your heart's health.
As you enter your 50s make you sure you know the subtle symptoms of a heart attack: unusual fatigue, pain in the abdomen, heaviness in the chest, shortness of breath, and nausea.
