Pickup trucks are a popular choice for families, but can they withstand a potentially deadly rollover crash?

The results of a new crash test were released on Thursday, and quite frankly, they raise some serious safety concerns.

The latest study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows small pickup trucks, as a category, lag in rollover protection.

"Rollover is a significant problem, because almost 10,000 people each year die in rollover crashes. So it's one of the most deadly crashes," said Russ Rader with the institute. "So it's important if you're looking for a vehicle, especially one with a high center of gravity like a pickup truck, that you get one with the best rollover protection that you can, and only the Nissan Frontier offers that."

According to the results of the crash test, the Nissan Frontier received a good rating . The Ford Ranger was acceptable. The Dodge Dakota, Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado were all rated marginal.

The automakers quickly responded to the institute's findings.

Toyota said it is "confident the Tacoma is among the safest pickup trucks on the road today."

GM said all of its vehicles, including the Chevrolet Colorado, "meet government safety standards."

Chrysler says "no single test can determine a vehicle's overall safety performance ... our priority continues to be designing vehicles that perform safely."
