Home, auto insurance not enough for RVs

Summary

A recreational vehicle is not a car. That's why there's RV insurance. Your homeowners or auto insurance won't cover the special features inside your RV, such as the TV or the furnishings, if they're damaged or stolen.

A recreational vehicle is not a car. That's why there's RV insurance.

"You've got some things that are covered under an RV policy that you're not going to find in the typical auto policy," says Karl Newman, president of the NW Insurance Council.

For instance, you probably keep a lot of things in that RV that you'd never have in your auto - furnishings and clothing, maybe a TV or video recorder. If damaged or stolen, they may not covered by your auto or homeowners insurance.

"RV insurance is specifically designed for the RV and so those special needs that you've got when you have a situation with an accident, with theft, with a breakdown, those types of needs are addressed directly with the RV insurance and may not be addressed under your typical auto policy," Newman notes.

He says RV insurance also covers the sort of liability issues you wouldn't have with a car.

"If a guest is injured inside your or someone is injured at your campsite and you're found negligent, that of course is the key, you may be liable for that and so you want to make sure that your liability policy for your RV would include that," Newman says.

So if you have an RV, sit down with your insurance advisor and make sure you have the coverage that's right for you.
