If you need a new washer or refrigerator, now is the time to buy.

And that's because you can save some serious money. What's being called the "cash for appliance clunkers" program kicked off in Washington state today.

The goal is to get energy-wasting appliances out of your house, recycled and replaced with new environmentally-friendly ones.

The state has $5.5 million to give away to get us to buy energy-efficient washers and refrigerators.

You can get a $75 rebate on most on energy star-certified refrigerators and $100 on most energy star washers.

"The state hopes to replace 60,000 appliances with this program and that would make a real impact on reducing global warming and helping the environment, said Tom Watson, King County's eco-consumer.

So how much better are the energy star appliances?

"Some of them will save 50 percent or more on energy. The washing machines will save 60 to 70 percent on water in some cases. So it's really noticeable on utility bills," said Watson.

What about people who have old appliances at home, but they're working just fine?

"For refrigerators and washers in most cases, it makes more sense environmentally to get a more energy efficient one because of your savings and the environmental positives," said Watson.

This cash for appliance clunkers money is part of the federal stimulus program. So many stores, like Sears, are offering their own discounts to get you in the store.

"We're excited. We opened the store at 7 a.m., and we had some folks came in prior to work so that was great to see," said Laina Lundgren a Seattle Sears store manager.

On top of the store discounts and state rebates, many of these energy-saving appliances also qualify for wash-wise rebate of up to $100 from your local utility.

Most energy star-certified washers and refrigerators qualify for this rebate program but not all. This is only for homeowners with old appliances. Landlords and new construction do not qualify.
