Are krill-oil pills as good as fish oil?
You probably already know about fish-oil supplements. How about krill-oil pills - the new way to get more heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids into your diet?
Krill oil comes from krill, a small crustacean. Fish oil comes from fatty fish like salmon and anchovies.
Our news partners at Consumer Reports looked at the claims for krill pills and they found a surprising lack of research comparing the health benefits of krill oil with fish oil.
Some early studies indicate krill oil might help reduce the risk of heart disease, reduce arthritis pain and reduce premenstrual symptoms. But the editors say, "More clinical research is needed."
Their advice: go to the source - eat fatty fish - such as salmon, sardines and tilapia - at least twice a week. All are high in Omega-3's and low in mercury. Remember, most canned salmon is wild salmon.
The bottom line: Unless you have heart disease or have suffered a heart attack, you probably don't need fish-oil pills.
Before you take them, check with your doctor. Consumer Reports says that's important, because Omega-3's can interact with other medications.
