Are you a mindless eater?

Overeating is a serious problem in this country. The Nutrition Action Healthletter recently reported on some of the reasons why we eat more than we should.
Food makes us feel better, so we tend to eat more when we're stressed. We all have our comfort foods.
A lot of us are guilty of what might be called "mindless eating." In other words, if it's on the plate, we eat it. There's an easy way to deal with that: cut the entree in half, stop when you're done that half and take the rest home.
The Healthletter says the same goes for food that's easily visible and easy to grab. Even if you know there are cookies in the kitchen cabinet, your will power should be stronger if they're out of sight. Of course, the best bet is not to buy them in the first place.
Is there a food that makes you lose control? I go nuts over peanut butter. Try to avoid these troublemakers.
Sometimes we eat overeat out of habit. If you start having a scoop of ice cream every night while watching TV, before too long you'll want ice cream every time you turn on the tube.
Figure out what triggers set you off and do your best to resist them.

@2nd Baseman Also the most docile people on the planet, and that's a bad combination with gluttony LOL
Don't watch the Food Channel. lol Talk about a trigger!
Food is my trigger. I guess I just need to realize when I'm eating that I need to portion out the snacks. Only bring out a handfull (bowlful?) of chips and leave the rest in the cupboard, substitute fruits for processed snacks, and things like that. However it's hard not to go back for seconds!
Easier said than done.
