We tend to think of Valentine’s Day as a romantic holiday — but kids "love" celebrating Valentine’s Day too. Here are some kid-friendly valentines, treats and a craft idea that youngsters can make with just a little help from a grown-up.
We all remember being a kid in class on Valentine’s Day and receiving all those valentines and candy. If you’re thinking of alternatives to sweets for your children this year, here’s a fun idea.
These free printable “Color Me Happy” valentines are set up for crayons instead of candy. Simply print them out and use a glue dot or tape to adhere a crayons. There are fun expressions like “I’m in the pink that you’re my Valentine,” and “It’s not out of the blue… I’d like you to be my Valentine.” Kids will enjoy giving them and parents will appreciate NOT getting another piece of candy!
Conversation Heart Frame
Kids really enjoy giving their parents or teachers something special for Valentine’s Day. Here’s a simple gift kids can create. Pick up a wooden frame (usually a dollar) at the craft store, have the kids paint it pink or red with acrylic paint. After it dries, use glue or glue dots to decorate with candy conversation hearts. Add a photo and you have a sweet present.
Heart Fruit Pizza
This is a no-bake healthy treat young ones can assemble themselves. You just need a Boboli pizza crust, heart shaped cookie cutters, strawberry cream cheese and fruit like strawberries and blueberries.
Kids can cut heart shapes out of the pizza crust and spread cream cheese on top. Parents can slice strawberries (they already look like hearts) and kids can add the fruit to the "pizzas." This is one where the kids will have as much fun making the "pizza" as they will eating it.
Simple Heart Cookies
It doesn’t get any easier that this! Grab some white fudge covered Oreos at the grocery store and a box of pre-made fondant. Following package instructions, warm up the fondant in the microwave (parents can assist with this), roll it out and using a little heart cookie cutter, cut small hearts out of it. Add to cookie and you have a “gourmet” looking treat that took minute to assemble.
Chocolate Dipped Marshmallows
You can find these yummy jumbo heart marshmallows in the grocery section of stores like Target now. Grab some baking chocolate and sprinkles. Follow the directions to melt the chocolate in the microwave and set on wax paper. Add sprinkles and voila’ you have a delicious sweet treat. Add lollipop sticks or place in cupcake liners to make them look "fancy."
