My Pillow: Does it work?

My Pillow: Does it work?

Promoters of a $60 pillow want you to give the gift of sleep this holiday season. They actually say their pillow, called My Pillow, is life-changing.

My Pillow is billed as the next generation in sleep innovation, with more comfort and better temperature control than other pillows.

According to the infomercial, the difference is because "My Pillow's patented 3-piece interlocking system creates a cooling effect and allows you to easily form My Pillow to your unique shape."

The texture is very springy and fluffy, but the pieces of fill are much larger than what you find in most pillows so it looks and feels like soft lumps. I found it quite soft and comfortable during the short time I tried it.

I found the perfect volunteer for a longer test in Andrea Cordova. She's accumulated a bed full of pillows in search of a good night's sleep.

"The first thing I notice is the pillow's not going flat when I put my head down on it," Cordova said during an initial test laying on top of the bedspread with her head on My Pillow.

She agreed to sleep on it for at least a week.

After ten nights I returned to Cordova's home to find her a little more impressed than she expected to be.

"I slept better after I got used to the texture," said Cordova. "It was comfortable."

She says the pillow did tend to collapse a bit where her head was and need to be fluffed every day but it was more comfortable than any of the pillows she was using. Cordova says for her, the pillow did not live up to claims of temperature control and keeping her cool.

"Didn't help on the heat side of it." she explained. "I mean if I was hot, I still was hot. It didn't cool me down."

On a scale of 1 to 4, Cordova gives My Pillow three and a half stars. Although she thinks the $60 price tag is a little steep.  As for the promise of being the most comfortable pillow she'll ever own?  "I don't know if I'd say that with a hundred percent confidence.", Cordova responded.

"I would say it was very comfortable I probably would need more time to sleep on  it before I said it was the most comfortable!"

The claim of the pillow being "life changing" of course, is subjective and a matter of interpretation.

A review of hundreds of customer comments online finds an abundance of people who swear by "My pillow" and gave it a 5 star rating, and an almost equal number who did not like it at all and give it only 1 star.  Much smaller numbers rated it 2, 3 and 4 stars. Fans say its super comfortable, helps the get better sleep, and helps reduce their body aches during sleep. Detractors say they didn't sleep any better, and they don't like the lumpy texture of the filling.

Other things you should know: Before using My Pillow you're supposed to run it in the dryer on high heat for 15 minutes to fluff up the filling. You're only supposed to use 100 percent cotton pillow cases with not too high a thread count and you're not supposed to use a pillow protector.

The pillow is machine washable but you must follow instructions carefully. The manufacturer offers a 60 day guarantee so it's important to read the terms and conditions very carefully. There are shipping charges to return the pillow directly to the manufacturer, unless the retailer where you buy it issues a refund for the total balance. You can read more about the product on the inventor's website.

The product is available in many retail stores, that carry As Seen On TV Products.

Andrea Cordova agreed to keep "sleeping on it"-  to see how My Pillow performs over a longer period of time. I'll follow up and have an update in a future Does It Work? segment.
