I'm a big fan of peanut butter. I love the stuff – especially crunchy! And I'm not alone. It's a staple on most homes.
Peanut butter is good for you, as long as you don't overdo it. It's high in unsaturated fat – the good kind – vitamin E and magnesium.
It's also loaded with calories -- 200 calories in two level tablespoons. And most of us have a lot more than that on a sandwich. And of course, there's often the jam or jelly.
Some brands of peanut butter have added sugar and salt. According to a recent article in Nutrition Action Healthletter, sodium ranges from 35 to 100 milligrams per tablespoon. That’s not especially high, but you can find brands that don't add salt.
Most major brands, like Jif, Skippy and Peter Pan don't add much sugar - about a gram or two. That's not the case with some gourmet and specialty varieties that have chocolate, flavorings or fruit added.
Nutrition Action says some of the new "energy mix" peanut butters are more sugar than fruit.
By the way, you don't have to worry about transfat. It's not there.
