A blood donation is truly the gift of life. That's true for both people and our pets.

Our pets are like us in so many ways. They get sick. They get hurt. They sometimes need surgery, and that can mean a blood transfusion.

That's why there's the ACCES Pet Blood Bank. It serves more than a thousand pets a year, and donations are needed.

Dr. Beth Davidow is a vet who specializes in emergency care at ACCES, which stands for Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services. And she says there is a real need for pet blood donations as pet, too, suffer from infectious diseases and even cancer.

So what does it take to be a pet blood donor?

"Dogs need to be at least 55 pounds, and that's because we are using human blood bags to draw blood," said Davidow. "And they need to be between 1 and 6 years old."

"Cats need to be at least 10 pounds, and cats need to be indoor-only," said Davidow, adding cats must be completely healthy as they are sedated for the donation.

Both dogs and cats must be up to date on their vaccinations in order to be eligible.

ACCES is holding a blood drive for both people and pets on Thursday. The event will be held at ACCES, at 4208 Lind Avenue SW in Renton, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
