It's isn't very often that Starbucks gets a thumbs up from the Nutrition Action Healthletter, but the editors had high praise for the company's Hearty Veggie and Brown Rice Salad Bowl.
"We really thought Starbucks deserved some credit," said Paige Einstein, a Registered Dietician who works at the Healthletter, told me the salad has some great ingredients.
"The Hearty Veggie and Brown Rice Salad Bowl has not only brown rice, but it's got some roasted butternut squash, kale, red cabbage, broccoli and peas. It's really a great salad," she said.
Want a bit more protein? The folks at the Healthletter also liked Starbucks Zesty Chicken & Rice Black Bean Salad Bowl.
"It has some roasted corn and quinoa, tomato and jimaca. These are ingredients that you just don't see in a lot of fast-food-type salads," Einstein told me.
The one downside to these salads is the sodium. It’s a bit high and the majority of that comes from the salad dressing.
"Which is why we recommend to just use half the dressing. We tested and using half is plenty," Einstein said.
