You know the drill. When you go out in the sun, you need to put on the sunscreen. But remember this: You won't get the protection you need unless you put on enough.
"You have to put on two tablespoons which is about a shot glass full of sunscreen lotion to cover your face and body when you're out on the beach in a bathing suit," said Patricia Calvo, deputy health editor at Consumer Reports.
And studies show, most people don't use nearly enough sunscreen.
"In our testing we found that if you use half the amount of suncreen you're supposed to use, you get half the SPF protection," Calvo told me.
Consumer Reports says you've got to be extra careful if you use spray sunscreens, because it's so hard to judge how much you've applied.
"A lot of that sunscreen can go into the air and not really hit your skin," Calvo cautioned. "So when you're using a spray, Consumer Reports recommends that you spray it into your hand and rub in on your body."
Remember, sunscreens are made to be applied about a half hour before you go into the sun.
