Want to lose weight? Get a bathroom scale.

"Study after study after study shows that people who weigh themselves regularly and keep a close track of that tend to lose more weight and maintain that weight loss than people who don't keep track of their body weight," says Dr. John Swartzberg at the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter.

Swartzberg says that doesn't mean you have to weigh yourself every day.

"I think it's very frustrating to weigh yourself every day because your body weight is going to fluctuate a pound to a pound and a half depending on how much water and foods you've eaten the night before and the day before.

"I think once or twice a week is usually enough. And if you see your weight creep up a little bit, you modify your diet and bring it down. That's what people who weigh themselves regularly tend to do."

Remember: weigh yourself on the same scale at the same time of day. Swartzberg likes first thing in the morning.

"Get up. Go to the bathroom and then weigh yourself at that time," he says. "Just do it at a uniform time ever day. But I think the morning's probably the best."
