We all know how easy it is to comparison shop on the Internet. But here’s something else you should know.
According to our news partners at Consumer Reports ShopSmart magazine, it's really important to choose the right search engine if you want to consistently find the lowest prices.
They shopped for five items: a hardcover book, sports bra, kitchen mixer, digital camera
and HD TV on eight major search engines. The price differences between the sites were often dramatic.
ShopSmart's Deputy Editor Jody Rohlena tells me Google.com/Shopping came out on top.
"Now Google isn't new but this price comparison function they have really works beautifully,” she said. “It's simple and it came up with the lowest total bill on our list of items that we were pricing."
PriceGrabber.com, a site the editors at Consumer Reports have recommended in the past, was a close second in this latest test. It did better back in 2011, when it won the top spot. ShopSmart says Price Grabber is the only price-comparison search engine other than Google.com/Shopping that "wasn't maddening to use."
