There is a way to get up to an extra year's worth of warranty protection for free.

Extended warranties are normally a waste of money. They're a huge profit-maker for the store, but chances are you'll never need to use it.

But there is a way to get up to an extra year's worth of warranty protection for free. Just buy the item with a credit card that extends the manufacturer's warranty.

A lot of cards offer this cardholder benefit. If the covered item breaks, they'll repair it, replace it or give you a refund.

A recent survey by the comparison website CardHub.com found that American Express and Discover provide this benefit for all of their cardholders. Visa and MasterCard offer extended warranty protection on some of their cards.

Here's the best part: you don't have to do anything to get this extra protection. You don't need to sign up. You don't need to register the product. You just need proof of the purchase date and that you used the card to buy it.

Card Hub says American Express is the only major card issuers to extend a manufacturer's warranty on a refurbished item. MasterCard excludes physical damage.
