Man shot during attempted robbery in Central District
Police respond to the scene of an attempted robbery turned shooting early Friday in the Central District.

SEATTLE -- A 36-year-old man was shot in the chest while struggling with the armed robber who accosted him and his girlfriend early Friday morning in the Central District, according to the Seattle Police Department.

According to police, the victim and his girlfriend noticed three men following them while they were walking through an alley in the 2500 block of East Columbia Street around 1 a.m.

One of the men pointed a gun at the victim's girlfriend, and she started running, according to the report.

The victim grabbed the man with the gun, and a struggle ensued during which the victim was shot in the chest.

Officers arrived quickly, but the men were not found despite the use of a helicopter and police dogs in the search.

The victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

It was the second reported shooting in the area within a seven-hour period. A 19-year-old was fatally shot Thursday evening just over a mile away.
