Firefighters respond to a fire late Tuesday night in West Seattle. A female resident was later arrested for investigation of arson.

SEATTLE -- A West Seattle resident was arrested early Wednesday morning for investigation of arson after setting fire to her own home, according to the Seattle Police Department.

According to police, the Seattle Fire Department was called to the home in the 10000 block of 51st Avenue Southwest around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday for reports of flames coming from the second floor.

Fire Department Battalion Chief Tamalyn Nigretto said firefighters got the fire out quickly and kept it contained to the room where it was started.

According to police, investigators found a gas can in that room and determined the fire was intentionally set.

After investigators interviewed the homeowner, it was determined his wife was the suspect and that she was likely suffering from a mental-health crisis.

The suspect was gone from the home by the time officers arrived, but she returned home around 1:30 a.m. and was arrested for investigation of arson.

According to police, the fire caused approximately $450,000 in damage to the home.
