OLYMPIA -- It's only June, but Democrats say the mudslinging is under way in the Rossi-Gregoire rematch.

One of Olympia's richest lobby groups is already shoveling out the dollars and dirt in radio ads.

Republican Dino Rossi is the Building Industry Association's poster child for change. And the group is pouring out $500,000 for radio ads on everything, from sex offenders to traffic.

"The governor has made it easier for these perpetrators to get away with what they want to do. I don't know how she can go to sleep at night," the ad states.

"It's pure raw politics. It is the beginning of a very ugly campaign," said Gov. Chris Gregoire.

The ads also target bad local traffic.

"I have not seen a significant improvement in traffic and yet I am taxed to the gills. You wonder: what did happen to the gas tax and where did my money go? It's time for a change," the ad says.

The money comes from business.

These ads are cynical and deceptive. They're funded by a trade association of ultra conservative developers who love Dino Rossi," said Aaron Astrom of Fuse Political Action Group.

But business activist Troy Nichols with the National Federation of Independent Businesses says a survey shows small business loves Rossi. He insists the ads are truthful.

"These are real people offering their candid assessment of where we are and a lot of it jibes with what NFIB members are saying." said Troy Nichols.

The business group also criticizes Indian tribal contributions to the Democratic Party, but Gregoire says less than $40,000 of the contributions actually went to her. She says the rest was soft money that could not go to her campaign.

"I'm offended. I'm offended," Gregoire said. "I've been attorney general for three terms. I have a record of the highest public integrity. I will forever maintain that. I will always do my job with that highest public integrity."

This may turn out to be one of the most expensive governor's races ever. The Business Industry Association is expected to spend whatever it takes to elect Rossi.

It's very likely that Democrat leaning groups will find the money to respond in kind.

All done by so-called "independent" committees, it comes down to bare-knuckles brawling. And the candidates will watch, wring their hands and say "I just can't control them."
