Alabama QB girlfriend a breakout star after title game

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's routing of Notre Dame for its second straight national championship has been overshadowed in part by a new breakout star - Katherine Webb, girlfriend of quarterback AJ McCarron and Miss Alabama USA 2012.
Webb gained tens of thousands of Twitter followers during and after Monday night's game, when ESPN cameras visited and revisited Webb in the stands and announcer Brent Musburger piled on the compliments. As of noon Tuesday, she had topped 143,000 followers, trumping McCarron's 101,000.
Before the game, Webb - who graduated with a business degree from longtime Alabama rival Auburn University in 2011, according to her pageant biography - had only a few hundred.
"Wow, I'm telling you quarterbacks: You get all the good-looking women," Musburger said as the camera focused on Webb, sitting with McCarron's mother. "What a beautiful woman. Wow!"
Some found the remarks from Musburger, 73, out of line. On Tuesday, ESPN released this statement: "We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that."
Arizona Cardinals defensive end Darnell Dockett also was among those who noticed Webb during the broadcast. He tweeted her his telephone number and suggested they meet after the game. He later tweeted that he meant to message her privately.
McCarron responded after the game, telling Docket on Twitter, "(hash)betterkeepdreaming like the rest of these dudes."
Webb, a 23-year-old model, told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that she first encountered McCarron on Twitter, and they met in early December when he attended the Miss Alabama USA pageant in Montgomery. The two visited over the holidays and publicly confirmed their romance right before the New Year.
"(McCarron) has such an amazing heart. He realizes that family and friends and the people closest to you are most important," she told the paper.
Webb's pageant biography says she was born in Montgomery and grew up in Phenix City. Webb worked for Chick-fil-A as a training director in Columbus, Ga., before moving to Los Angeles to pursue modeling. She finished in the top 10 in the national pageant.
Before Monday's game, Webb tweeted a photo of herself wearing a jersey with McCarron's number, her arms wrapped around the quarterback.
Early Tuesday, Webb posted her first tweet to her new followers: "So extremely blessed... (at)10AJMcCarron. Congrats to Alabama and making history! (hash)BCSChamps."

Why on earth would Musburger need to apologize? That is ridiculous. What kind of sanctimonious jerk finds a compliment to a beautiful woman offensive?
This story is a wake up call about the need for our country to help the less fortunate. Lets have tax deductions for the ugly people, so they have a far shot at getting on the stadium kiss cam.
@Harrison Free plastic surgery for everyone. It seems only fair...
Auburn alumni dating an Alabama QB...I wonder how the rabid community of football fans in Alabama feels about all of this.
Humma humma ding ding and everything! Lay off ol Brent, he's not the best broadcaster but he means no harm.
Yes, yes. She's beautiful. I had to look up AJ McCarron, since I don't follow college football. He's fairly attractive as well. Two attractive people, who both happen to be popular public figures, found each other and started dating. Shocking.
Â
Actually the real shocker was seeing that McCarron was born in 1990. Since when are people born in the 90's old enough to be playing college football.... or dating for that matter? Good gracious I feel old!Â
Superficial beauty never lasts - only inner beauty does.
@UtterReality Your point is what... my wife is quiet attractive to me all 110 lbs of her and imagine that I married her... people know what they like and sorry | I am certainly no spring chicken but I take care of her and she takes care of me... sorry but society gravitates to physically attractive people.. its primal instinct... no point getting all twisted up over it...
@UtterReality While that may be true, only ugly people say that. Kinda like beauty is only skin deep but ugly goes down to the bone. just saying
@Hopp  @UtterReality LOL, You got me. I'm probably your average dude, and I really dislike attractive people getting the accolades or the attractive girlfriends. It's like a slap in the face because you know she wouldn't give a guy like me the time of day...any day. Yes, pity party for me!
@VoltronLions Women care less about physical beauty than men (and don't I appreciate that fact!). Making women laugh and a little uncertain about what you will do next is better than looking like Fabio.
Â
I'll bet the confidence of being a world class athlete  has as much to do with it as anything else.
@VoltronLions @Hopp @UtterReality At least you're honest! My favorite is when stick thin celebrities have babies and then give us average gals advice on how to lose the baby weight. They already have great genes, that's the only answer they need.
@Hopp Like poor people who say money is the root of all evils, and money can't buy you happiness.
Brent Musberger is and has been a terrible announcer.
Now Mccarron gets to **** Alabama year round
@marvin Would have been funny if you had said Auburn instead if Alabama.
 @JK15 yea
Â
Her thighs are too big. There I said it.Â
Musburger...lol. That comment was nothing compared to what he said in one of the earlier bowl games on ESPN. He singled out a black player and went on about how he grew up in a good home "with both parents." The people watching the game in our living rooms were like...floored at the subtle racism from the old geezer.Â
@lakeview subtle racism from the old geezer....
Â
Stating fact is not racism.
@Controlled-Insanity  @lakeview If you don't state the same facts equally for white as well as minority, it indicates predisposition to assuming that fact applies to the minority. That is racism - although not the white-sheet wearing kind.
Â
A lot of white players don't grow up in "good homes" or with both parents. If Brent had a noted history of pointing out similar situations for all, a case could be made for that just being part of his thing.
Â
@lakeview Yeah, I think it's time to put Brent out to pasture.
If I was a quarterback I would let her sack me.
How dare you take away the "reality" show type limelight from Kim Kardashian! Now she Kim is going to have hint about another sex video or cry about someone talking about her butt so she can get the attention back on her!
@cawlnaduckaduck Can you think of anything notable that any Kardashian has ever done with her clothes on?
Yeah, me neither.
@cawlnaduckaduck Or suggest she'll have twin Kanye Jr.'s
Um, wow. She is lovely.
AJ McCarron, you have hit the high point of your dating career.
I don't think she's all that hot.Â
@lakeview your fat cheeks must be blurring your vision.Â
Â
 @lakeview I'm a hetero woman and I think she's smokin'!
@Doxie  @lakeview I'm a bisexual woman I don't think she's that hot. Orange people just don't do it for me. She does have a great stomach though.Â
@Isadora  @lakeview I guess I didn't notice the tan. Her tummy is the one thing I think looks kinda weird!  That vertical bulge is not something you see every day, but I'm sure she worked hard to get it.
This used to happen all the time watching basketball games on the old satellite systems. Â When they went to commercials you could hear the announcers talking about hot chicks in the stands, the camera guys would pan around looking for them, it was pretty funny.
@oledawg we did this in the 70s at high school football games we taped, I guess things don't change too much
@oledawg Musburger getting all the heat, but I don't hear anyone barking about the cameraman or the technical director in the truck...
Good for her. Other than that - no big deal.
@Throbbinhood In other words, your penis isn't "throbbin" over the deal, throbbinhood?
I'd hit that.

@deadcandance I noted on my facebook page at some point last year that we've become very very looks obsessed in our society over the last 50 years or so and that I'd caught myself being very much in that net.
Â
Nowadays when we look at a talented young actress, many if not most men immediately think 'what does she look like naked?' Beyond the simple biology of the issue, Hollywood and Madison Avenue have trained us to believe that physical beauty somehow equals talent and that's simply not true.
Â
Can you imagine Katherine Hepburn, or some of the other classic Hollywood stars putting up with the intrusion of the papparazzi into their lives the way our celebrity-obsessed culture allows them to? And these women were being traded like baseball cards by the Hollywood studios at the time!
@deadcandance You're right I think a sex tape is required before becoming a "star" now.  Meryl Steep is from a different time when talent mattered.
@DontTreadonMe @deadcandance OK there guys, I just got home from a large number of GOP, a much smaller of Dems and a respectable group of independents, celebrating WA State Secretary of State Sam Reed's retirement after a quite impressive public service career. Â So I had to chuckle at both of you misspelling Meryl Streep's last name, like you just got home from a Tea Party Celebration together and, you know, "steeping your tea," plus best of all, given your profile names. Â And please do note this really is meant as a genuine good natured mutual chuckle hopefully with you both, as we all misspell now and again in our going too fast society! Â Plus, we should all be able to laugh at ourselves and amongst one another more, naturally also with mutual respect... :)
