Photographer killed while shooting Justin Bieber's car
LOS ANGELES (AP) - A paparazzo was struck and killed by a car while darting across a street after taking pictures of Justin Bieber's Ferrari when it was pulled over along a freeway in Los Angeles, police said Wednesday.
Bieber was not in the car at the time. The singer later said his prayers were with the family of the 29-year-old photographer who was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after the accident late Tuesday afternoon.
His name was withheld by police pending notification of relatives.
"Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves," Bieber said in the statement released by Island Def Jam Music Group.
The death came about six months after another photographer was charged with reckless driving and with violating a 2010 California law that toughened punishment for those who drive dangerously in pursuit of photos for commercial gain.
However, a judge later dismissed the paparazzi law charges, saying the law was overly broad and violated First Amendment free-speech protections.
On Tuesday, a friend of Bieber's was behind the wheel of the Ferrari registered to the singer when a California Highway Patrol officer pulled it over for speeding along Interstate 405, authorities said.
"This photographer evidently had been following the white Ferrari" and when it was pulled over he stopped, parked and crossed the street to snap photos, Los Angeles police Detective Charles Walton said.
The photographer stood on a low freeway railing to shoot photographs of the traffic stop over a chain-link fence, authorities said.
"The CHP officer told him numerous times that it wasn't safe for him to be there and to return to his vehicle," Walton said.
After the officer issued the traffic ticket and the Ferrari left, the photographer began to run back across the street to his car when he was struck by a Toyota Highlander, Walton said.
The driver, a 69-year-old Los Angeles woman, had two small grandchildren in the back seat.
It was not immediately clear how fast she was going. The photographer was carried about 30 feet on the hood of her car, Walton said.
"The windshield was smashed in her car and there was glass all over the front seat" but no blood, Walton said.
The motorist was distraught after the crash. She and the children were taken away by her husband.
She was not believed to be at fault for the accident and was unlikely to be cited, police said.
"There were no sidewalks on the street there, there was no crossing place for a pedestrian, there was no reason to expect a pedestrian," Walton said.
The street also was dark and winding, he added.
"It would have been very difficult for her to see him," Walton said.
It was not immediately clear whether the photographer was a freelancer or full-time professional, although he was carrying expensive camera gear and had connections to a photo agency, Walton said.
In the previous incident, photographer Paul Raef was charged in July with reckless driving and also with violating the paparazzi law that set a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $2,500 fine.
Authorities said Raef was arrested after Bieber was chased in another car on Interstate 101 at speeds up to 80 mph.
However, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Thomas Rubinson dismissed the paparazzi law charges.
The law was prompted by the experiences of Jennifer Aniston, who provided details to a lawmaker on being unable to drive away after she was surrounded by paparazzi on Pacific Coast Highway.
Sad that this happened. Sad that the photographer felt the need to take photos of some car getting pulled over. Sad some publication would buy those photos. Sad that publication would print those photos (with a screaming headline). Sad the public would buy that publication so they can view those photos and thus ask themselves (why did they pull over no name's car?)
Â
What a world we live in when someone gets labeled a celebrity for doing pretty much nothing. Gush gush, cry, cry.
Â
Yep, pretty sad!
I would like this article much more if the title said & was about: "Justin Bieber Killed by Photographer's Car".
@Donkey Kong Not funny.  Doesn't matter if you hate an artist or not, wishing death upon someone is pathetic. Â
Of all the things to die for...
What kind of gun did the photographer have?
An idiot for running across the street at night just to take a picture.
So how would you like to be known as the paparazzo that got killed trying top get Justin Bieber's picture?
Well, I think Justin is a tool, but shooting his car seems a bit much.....
Â
Kidding, I know. I was poking fun at Komo's amazing headline editing.
"'Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves," Bieber said in the statement released by Island Def Jam Music Group."
Spoken like a true Canadian, always looking to government to take care of you. Sheesh. Maybe this idiot photographer should have looked twice before running across the street for a picture.
Who is justin bieber?
@DTMD Justin Bieber is a gayboi
Must be nice to be able to lend a "friend" your ferrari so he can go get tickets for you. Lucky they didn't run over someone. Grow up Bieber.
@Klondiko I hate to admit I know this - but little Biebs is lending out his car all the time.  This is not the first story I've heard where a friend is driving one of his cars.  At least there's some benefit to being friends with him. Â
@Klondiko Really, is that how you think speeding tickets work?
"Stoughton says no charges are expected against the motorist who hit the man."
Â
Though a parade in his honor is planned for next week.
@Iconoclast I'm in, wanna car pool?
Why is this news? The paparazzi bring this crap on themselves by constantly hounding every move celebrities make! Also, why does everything regarding Justin Bieber get into the news? So what!!??
@panda bear I read on another site that the photog who died had witnessed Bieber smoking pot while driving earlier in the day. The photog was a freelancer who thought he was on to some big story and just wasn't paying attention. It's sad when some dies just because they don't look both ways before crossing a street.
@panda bear A person affiliated with a top selling recording artist/celebrity died, hence it's news. I don't know why people get so outraged when celebrities they don't personally follow get articles written about them. I don't care for the guy's music, but others (millions) do, so there's that.
@panda bear supply and demand. people want to read about him getting pulled over. i don't get it. yet we also both read and are commenting on this story... what does that say about us?
One less scum sucking leech feeding off the teat of the wealthy and famous...........good riddance.
This is a non story. It really has nothing to do with Bieber hinself. Guy got hit beacuse he decided to walk across a busy freeway. end of story.
@Surveyor1 this is nit a non story.  You posted about it therefore it's real
Surprised this hasn't happened before given how these idiots harass entertainers so much.Â
I AM CALLING YOU OUT, BIEBER!! Â Stories like this peeve me for two reasons. First and foremost is the senseless loss of life that was so easily avoidable. Just need to pay attention, both parties, the victim and the driver of the car. Second, is the senseless core of what people put value on,,,,teen singers, expensive cars etc. Â If I ever had that much money yes i would enjoy it, but would NEVER buy so much flashy material things to draw attention to myself. Just a reliable long lasting non flashy car will do, and a modest 3 bedroom home, not a mansion. Second, I would use my millions to do good for other people, such as building a few homeless shelters around the country where they are most needed, and helping the poor unemployed people..then open up battered womens facilities everywhere and advertise heavily that help is available and they no longer need to feel helpless and alone...and thirdly would also build no-kill animal shelters. How about doing something good with all that money Bieber, instead of splurging only on yourself family and friends!! Â I TRIPLE DOG DARE YOU!
@Silver Lioness But they're his millions...he can do with the money as he pleases. While I find it admirable that many celebrities do reach out and spend the bulk of their money on philanthropic purposes, it's still HIS MONEY...he earned it, people were willing to part with it and ensure he made billions. Why aren't you chastizing those who could have saved a couple hundred on concert tickets for not giving that money to charity instead? I happen to feel I don't need a lot of "fluff" in my life and prefer to help those in need, but I earn my money as well, and feel I have the right to spend it any way I deem suitable in my life...
@Silver Lioness It is his money to do with as he pleases. Just as your money is for you to do as you please. How is it that you think you should be able to tell him what to do with his money. What you would do with the money promotes homelessness.. building shelters for them.. I am sorry, they need to get jobs and work like everyone else does.Â
Now, this idiot, paid for his stupidity with his life. Most people survive their stupid age.. but some don't.. I hope he isn't married with children.. In that event, maybe Mr. Bieber will provide some assistance for that family... although, he should be under no requirment to do so.. especially by you.. Â
Â
@Silver Lioness You have no clue what all Justin Bieber spends his money on. Sure, he has things like a Ferrari but for all you know, he may also be donating lots of money to charities or paying a relative's mortgage or college tuition (or would you consider that "splurging" simply because they're related to him?). You really have no clue. As for spending your money modestly, I often feel that's what I would do also, but only because it's my choice. I wouldn't feel comfortable in a huge mansion of fancy car. And take it a step further and consider what is "modest". There are many people to whom a 3 bedroom home would be the height of luxury. Simply owning a home instead of living in a low rent, slummy apartment would be a luxury to them! And your reliable, long lasting car would be considered luxurious by many also! So when do we cross the line from "need" to "want"? Do I really NEED a car at all since I could walk to the grocery store from where I live and could find a job at a business within walking distance? As for the type of car he does own, I think it's pretty nice of him to let a friend borrow it. After all, many people don't even allow friends to borrow their less expensive vehicles. Speaking of which, when my son was younger he attended a church with a family that was quite well-to-do. They owned a nice van for everday excursions with their children as well as a Lambergini (sp?) and another expensive, sporty looking car (can't remember the type). Both cars were freely offered to their friends and fellow congregants for special occasions such as weddings, proms, and valentine dates. In fact, my son and his bride were going to borrow the Lambergini as their wedding vehicle but the person who borrowed it the weekend before was in an accident (speed not a factor - not even the person's fault) and the car was in the shop. But they did get to use the other vehicle, which I thought was more elegant looking anyway. The two dad's both got to drive it. My husband brought it around to the front of the church when the groom and bride were ready to leave but because it was one of those cars that drives without the key in the ignition, he had the key in his pocket and forgot to take it out and give it to our son. They got several blocks away before the car was "out of range" and quit on them!
@Silver Lioness I will have two of what he just had for two reasons.  1. It will make me feel good. 2. it will make me feel good.
Â
Â
@Silver Lioness You're completely certifiable. This story was about a blood-sucking, low-life, sleazebag leach getting killed in the act of blood-sucking.
@slappywag  @Silver Lioness Yeah, sometimes we feel like they are the dregs of society, but I have to wonder if the poor slob was just trying to make a living to support a wife and kid.  It's not exactly cheap to live down there, especially in this economy.  I personally don't give a rip about this teeny bopper Beiber character, I just hope *IF* there is a widow and orphan left behind, they are taken care of... without the need for taxpayer support.
@K. Coleman  @slappywag Actually, the entire crowd of celeb vulture photographers are run by groups of people, and they are NOT just some poor sap trying to make a living. It's a racket and it's brutal.  They are ruthless, and they make sure that no one gets into the biz that is not part of their group.  It's not like the old days, when you saw the same celeb photographers lining up on the red carpet, then having drinks with Cary Grant.  These are like pirates, basically, and they will stop at nothing.Â
So let me understand this, a guy got hit taking a pic of an empty car. Â This is what makes for a story now?
@DeadRabitz I don't think the car was driving itself, wasn't empty.
@oledawg You didn't read the article did you?  He wasn't hit by biebers car, he was hit by another car because he was in the street taking pictures of biebers car. Â
@DeadRabitz What happened Rabitz, you didn't quite understand what you read?
@DeadRabitz I did read it.  The car was pulled over for speeding, someone else was driving the car, wasn't Beiber.  Correct, he was hit by another car after Beiber's Ferrari took off and the photog was trying to get back to his car, so which car do you think was empty?
@DeadRabitz It is just too bad it wasn't helmet hair himself.
Boobers driver parked it there, because shortpants don`t know how do drive a stick...
Â
The idiot had it comin'. That's what you should come to expect when you get a stupid, pathetic job like the paparazzi.
I have the feeling Justin will meet the driver and thank him personally!!
What did the Newsies expect Bieber's spokesperson to say about it? "Ooops, I'm sorry, I shouldn't drive around town anymore" I smell a suit coming!
@rjchevy Did you actually read the article?
