Sean Penn: Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is like Detroit

NEW YORK (AP) — As the three-year mark approaches of the devastating earthquake in Haiti that killed, injured and displaced hundreds of thousands of people, actor- activist Sean Penn describes life in the country's capital city.
In the January issue of Esquire magazine, Penn compares Port-au-Prince to Detroit, saying, "It's not more dangerous, it's not less dangerous."
Penn founded a relief organization in response to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. He still spends about half his time there.
The two-time Oscar winner says a child with a fever in the U.S. gets medicine, a cold bath, or a trip to the emergency room. In Haiti, he says, parents wait "to see if he's going to die or not."
The January issue of Esquire goes on sale Dec. 18.

Sean, you have millions of dollars. Why don't you just move there and give them your money while you are at it?
Haiti is a classic example of what you can do by throwing a ton of money at something. NOTHING. If they had divided up that money everyone on Haiti would be a multimillionaire and they still would have nothing. Haiti has been a train wreck for decades and I don't see any change in the near or distant future even with people going over there and pampering them like babies. Â
Still a legend in his own mind.
Both places have an uncontrolled breeding problem, ignoring the fact of limited jobs and resources yet same results. For the first time I have to agree with him.
good for him and thank you for the update not much of that, though times r tough all over these days. bless him. lets hope he gets help for these people and soon i might add.relief haiti im sure is still seeking donations? red cross?
@maggie112 The problem is that others CAN'T help them; people keep trying and it keeps failing because they have learned dependency, not freedom. They keep doing the same things that always fail, which is waiting for others to come and help them. They MUST learn to help themselves. It's the same problem in much of Africa. Not a genetic problem, a cultural problem. Keep doing what fails, and it'll keep failing. Look at other nations and history, learn what works, and do *that* instead.
This elitist should be proud of Detroit. It's his buddies drawing this mess up after all. 50 years of this goverments social experiment has gotten them there. And it's going to spread with this regime in charge Sean. Your other buddy Hugo can show us how great Marxism/communism really is. After all Sean, it's just that the wrong people have instituted this wonderful type of goverrnment. We need to spread more misery here, and will, with your pals in command. Again, you should be very proud of the USA.
@Troglidite Were you awake when you posted this? It has a very stream-of-unconsciousness feel to it.

To pick but one bone, how "elitist" is it really to travel to Haiti and personally help earthquake victims? Seems to me like one of the most non-elitist acts possible.
He needs to shut his trap and stick to acting.
@NWNative Yeah, shame on him for starting a relief organization and helping Haitians rebuild.Â
@Insomniac Dreams  @NWNative In the eyes of the average American dolt, those people are not even worthy of existing. Unless of course they have liquified fossil
@NWNative -- He should just shut his trap, his acting isn't much better. Just saying.
@Bianca Bianca should shut her trap too. She is a biotch with a big mouth only good for one thing.
@Bianca  @NWNative Now that weed is legal (sorta), maybe he can get back in his groove. Naaaaaaaaaaah...
