New armband takes guesswork out of sun protection
Now that summer is finally here, you really need to remember to apply sunscreen - and often.
Instead of guessing when you need more, a new armband can tell you.
Iowa State's Extension Center in Ottumwa is distributing a special armband that helps teach about harmful ultraviolet rays and the need to use sunscreen.
The elastic bracelet has several white beads on it, that when exposed to U-V rays, change colors.
That change helps remind kids that the sun's rays are harmful to their skin. Horticulture Program Assistant Lynn Schulte explains, "Repeated sun exposure is a problem for kids and leads to melanoma and skin cancer. If we can even reach one child and let them know that when beads change color, I need to protect my skin, it's great."
