Children's Hospital gives big 'thank you' to Russell Wilson

Despite his busy schedule leading the Seattle Seahawks as quarterback, Russell Wilson and his wife Ashton visit Seattle Children’s Hospital once a week for “Blue Tuesday.”

Now, the patients have created a special video to thank Russell and Ashton for lifting their spirits each week.

Douglas Taliaferro, equipment coordinator at Children’s, escorts the Wilsons around the hospital every Tuesday.

“He’s just an all-around good guy, and they’re an all-around amazing couple,” Taliaferro said. “Kids know Russell is real, sincere and honest. He is truly one of a kind.”

Deborah Mendoza and her son Kaden ran into Russell and Ashton in the hallway at Children’s one Tuesday. Kaden has undergone three open heart surgeries and had just come from an appointment at Children’s Heart Center and when he came face-to-face with his hero.

“I’ve never seen Kaden so happy,” Deborah said. “With everything he’s gone through and continues to go through, meeting Russell meant the world to him. It’s hard to put into words, but just thinking about it makes me want to cry.”

That Tuesday, Deborah said her son forgot about his deteriorating heart.

“He could not stop talking about Russell. The whole way home he held Russell’s autographed picture and couldn’t stop looking at it. The experience was priceless.”

Now, the hospital is sending out a special message: “From Children’s to the Wilsons, thank you for touching the lives of so many kids every Tuesday. Go Hawks!”
