Threats of gun violence force closure of Skyline High School

SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- Threats of violence against students prompted Skyline High School officials to cancel school on Thursday.
In a notification released late Wednesday night, school officials said they were dealing with an "emergency situation" and asked students, staff and community members to stay away from the school on Thursday.
The King County sheriff's office is investigating an online post claiming to be from a Skyline student. In the post, which included a photo of a gun, the student says he's going to take his father's gun to school and "open fire on the people in the commons in the morning until I am either taken down by our school's police officer, or until I run out of mags."
The post was circulated around social media sites on Wednesday and was reported to police.
Deputies so far don't know who wrote the post or if it's a legitimate threat, according to King County sheriff's Sgt. Cindi West.
In Wednesday's email to parents, the school district apologized for the late notification, but said "student and staff safety is our top concern."

just wanna say well done 4 chan and reddit you both saved lives today , people say the internet needs censorship but you know what if it where censored this kid would have kept his mouth shut and people may well of died , and you sure as hell wouldn't have Redditors and Anon around to help keep people safe where they can =) Â
chuck blagg is my world studies teacher!
If I was involved in the school, I would send out a memo to the parents about the 'father's gun'. Every father from the school that has a gun should check to make sure their gun is still where it was the last time they saw it. If the gun is missing, they should immediately confront their son and inform the police. This is no laughing matter and hopefully they will trace and capture whoever this SOB is.
Hopefully they catch whoever wrote this threat. Whether it is a joke or not, it is NOT funny, NOT cool, and your arse belongs in jail!
This wasn't funny or a joke. Â Those who did this committed a crime. Â Turn yourselves in. Â I'M THE LAW!
This will be more ammo for Hillary to push through suspending the 2nd amendment via the UN.
Threats like that should be taken very seriously. I'm sure the FBI can easily trace where this came from. I say the FBI, because this can be classified as domestic terrorism.
Â
I just returned from a fieldtrip to 4chan.org the site where the alleged threat/hoax/game plan was posted. Until now I believed that Facebook , Yelp, and KOMO news comments was the cutting edge place to speak up and sound off with your opinions. The Internet is fabulous because it allows us to read a story about a high school that Iâd never heard of and then do our own sleuthing. We literally form opinions based on the initial story and begin peeling away at the onion, good or bad armed with only our Google searches. Being just an âold crusty Negra man, admittedly set in my ways and feeling like baggage left at the train station. The kids are creating new words or acronyms and this old fart is unable to grasp the latest trendy lingo. What the hell has happened to this country where those types of websites have become so popular, spewing the kind of crap I just saw. Where are the parents and why arenât they monitoring their kids internet use? In our home we use an internet sanitizing service called OpenDNS. As a parent you can see anytime your kid attempts to go to any forbidden type sites. Letâs pray this story was just a hoax and if there were some young person feeling they had been boxed in a corner, they would seek help.
@Harrison I guarantee that if your kids are teenagers or older, they know how to bust right through the internet sanitizing service you're using without you even knowing it.  These children that have been brought up with computers as not just a part of their life, but a critical function of life have a deep understanding of computers that most older people just don't.  This isn't a bad thing at all, but it is something that needs to be monitored.  I truly think the only fail-safe way to keep your children safe on the internet is to only have a shared computer in a place that is occupied by many and to every so often, walk over and look at what they're doing.  I guess this isn't even truly fail-safe... they just need to have constant monitoring.  This is almost impossible at this point when computers can now fit in our pockets, they're everywhere. 4chan is known for being the sewer of the internet, its not a really nice place to hang out or read anything. Â People have a false sense of anonymity there and write horrible posts. Â I agree with you that I hope this was a hoax and I really want whoever this was to be found. Â
Â
Anyway, this whole thing is sad. Â If someone truly was planning to kill his classmates or if someone was lying about doing it in order to get a day off of school... either way, very sad.
@Amanda Joy  @Harrison I am a father of a 14 year old and I bet that there is not a kid out there that can bust through my internet protection and I do use OPENDNS.  I also use a Netscreen Router which is of industrial grade quality.  On top of that I can monitor my child's usage without them every knowing I am watching.  Not to mention they do not have the admin password to override any of the settings.
@Joel@Amanda Joy@Harrison
2 things im pretty sure there is a kid who could get though your internet security and 2 the very fact that 4 chan is the cesspit it is has possibly saved lives here.
Now don't get me wrong i hate 4 chan (mostly /b/ ) but if it where not the cesspit it is this guy may not have posted there and if he didn't post there its possible no-one wouldn't ever have known about this until it was to late.
And with the whole kids thing i just think keeping an eye them is the best bet (assuming where talking like 12-16 ish here) i mean by 17 people are smart enough to realise what they ever do or don't wana be part of and if someone is turned off by 4 chan or some of the other sites out there they will just avoid it.
I have had complealy free reign of the internet since the age of about 14 (the joys of maintaining the family houses networking) and sure i have seen the off putting things but as a thinking human i just avoided them =)Â , t.l.d.n.r well done 4 chan you did something right, dispite my own personal option of you credit where credit is dueÂ
Â
I graduated from SHS in the early 2000's. Sure there were always some jocky, preppy, stuck up people around, but my God, get a life. You think violence is the answer? Go screw yourself.
If it was an "online post" it is traceable. ANd they should find the person who posted it. They need help.
I was thinking the same thing. It should be easy enough to trace.
@mstipton they will do this happened on the same site a few years back ,but last time they covered there tracks better ie didn't post there schools name, i believe the other users ended up downloading the picture he took and retraising the ip address it was uploaded back to his address, after which police where called and they guys was caught red handed the next morning with a bag full of pipe bombs.Â
I hope they find whatever punk did this and prosecute the living hell outa him.

Â
@FormerMarineSgt I'm sure that's the sanest and most reasonable policy..
After it was posted on 4chan, a Skyline HS student posted it on reddit. Â Here is a link to that thread.Â

Â
It could be a joke, but it could be very real. Â I'm glad they're taking action and I hope they find out who the person is that's responsible for the original post. Â I actually called the Issaquah Police non-emergency line and urged them to close down schools that are in close proximity... if the gunman realizes that his plans are falling apart, he may just decide to go to another school and do the same thing. Â He must be in a horrible state of mind and if he's decided to kill himself and psyched himself up to do it... he'll find a way. Â I was told that the police already have a presence at all the schools and that every officer is aware of what's going on. Â I'm just not convinced that's enough. Â I'm very worried about the students and faculty at not only Skyline HS, but every school in that district, its definitely a scary situation, they will all be in my thoughts, especially my little sister, who attends a HS in this district.
@Amanda Joy I hope they find them too. And I hope they make them pay for the additional police response resources. People like this need to be held accountable.
and with daddy's gun no less.
With the internet, the posting could have originated from china. If you are a parental unit and recognize your weapon in the picture on the news, please raise your hand. Â
Reminds me of when the morons would be calling in the bomb threats at Lindbergh. All it takes is one idiot with a big mouth to ruin things for everyone and they don't even think of the seriousness of the situation, let alone the consequences that come with it.
Where is/was the online posting? The story makes me wonder if this was some sort of prank. Â The apoplectic details seem a bit too specific and might require more scrutiny before folks go yelling fire in a theatre . If it is an innocent student getting punked, letâs hope he and his parents file a law suit

@Laura  @Harrison Just a clarification, it was originally posted on 4chan.org, but has since been taken down.  That link is a screenshot of the original posting.Â

Also: 4chan is kind of NSFW, so fair warning if you travel over there.
@ParkerReno  @Laura  @Harrison Thank you, I now feel like I have been living in a cave because I had no clue what 4chan or reddit was and no idea about NSFW. I feel much better now. I'm going to drop a few lines to my teenage daughter and see if she says "What?" or "Oh yeah"..I'm hoping for the "What?"
@ParkerReno  @Laura  @Harrison and watch out for reddit too- a lot of NSFW and very addicting
