BREMERTON, Wash. - A man was killed and a woman was seriously injured when a car plunged down a steep embankment early Monday near Illahee State Park in Bremerton.

Police and medics responded to the scene, in the area of Bahia Vista Drive and Sylvan Way, at about 3:05 a.m. after receiving a report of a serious crash, said Ileana LiMarzi of Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue.

Arriving at the scene, a crew found a vehicle about 200 feet down a steep embankment.

A man was found about 25 feet away from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female driver was found to be alive and conscious, but remained trapped inside the car.

Additional resources were called in so that special equipment could be lowered by ropes down the 50-degree slope. The woman was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Harrison Hospital in Silverdale, where she is listed in serious condition.

The accident remains under investigation.
