1 killed, 2 injured in high-speed crash off I-5 in downtown Seattle

SEATTLE - Police say excessive speed appears to be a factor in a crash that killed one man and injured two others early Saturday just off Interstate 5 near the Washington State Convention Center in downtown Seattle.
A police sergeant on patrol discovered the crash, which caused extensive property damage, at about 2:05 a.m. near 6th Avenue and Union Street.
Medics responded and found one male passenger, believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, dead at the scene, said Detective Jeff Kappel of the Seattle Police Department.
The driver and the other passenger were both transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
A preliminary investigation found that the three men were heading south on Interstate 5 in a BMW 745 sedan when the driver lost control as he attempted to negotiate the Union Street exit.
The car slammed into a concrete barrier and a wall, overturned and came to rest a short distance east of 6th Avenue and Union Street.
The driver, a 31-year-old man, was under police guard at the hospital and was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of vehicular homicide when he was released Saturday afternoon, Kappel said.
Traffic collision investigation squad detectives responded to the scene and continue to actively investigate.

Folks in fancy cars always seem to think that they are better drivers than everyone else, when in reality they are almost always idiotic fools. Darwinism at work here.
With our justice system, he'll be out in a few months and driving another fast sedan at a crazy speed with his passengers... Â

@Eduardo Capistrano  Nice stereotyping of BMW owners. Your jealousy is showing.Â
 @lakeview  @Eduardo Don't think so, lakeview. It's just that I've come to learn that automobiles are depreciating assets. If I wanted a BMW, I would pay cash and buy one. But my Toyotas are much more dependable vehicles and I don't have to pay an arm and a leg whenever I need to have them serviced. Nor do I need to project an image of being somebody whom I'm not. Not saying that all BMW owners are pricks; but certainly many of them are. I hope you're not one.
We might as well name him...Mohamed Ali Hussein was booked into King County Jail today at 1:42pm for "Vehic Homicide Inv."
 @Bex In addition, the same guy was booked 2/13/12 (released 5/22/12) into KCJ for residential burglary, driving with a suspended license, and a failure to appear on a DUI. He's a multiple-time loser that needs to be locked up for good.
 @Bex Correction: the driving with a suspended license was actually driving without an ignition interlock device.
@DudeIncognito @Bex  I just come here for the breaking news in the comments...
 @DudeIncognito He's such a stand-up citizen ;)
It just proves that dumb arses can't drive BMWs.
There is a difference between making bad choices that would only result in bad consequences for yourself and making bad choices that endanger innocent people's lives. I've made bad decisions before but none of them have endangered others. Screw the driver. Thank goodness he did not hit any innocent driver(s) or an innocent people just walking on the sidewalk in that area.
time for car reform. the only resson for a passenger car to have more than 150 hp is to kill lots of people every year.
@dorimonsonfan it's not like 350 HP is a constitutional right anyway, they should limit small cars to 100, bigger sedans to 180, and trucks/SUVs to 250, as far as privately owned passenger vehicles are concerned. that would slow down much of the excessive speed.Â
 @dorimonsonfan I sincerely hope that's a joke.
 @Kevin Gano  He failed math.
im the cousin of zackirye the one who got killed it s so sad i miss him so much and im s o s os obeen crying every second
And one more thing, and I'm sure I'll be skinned alive for this, but why does it more often than not seem to be a BMW that wrecks like this? Yes, they handle great and yes they're fast but they're not nascar and you're not Tony Stewart.
 @cm257n7 because Jay Z drives a Bimmer
Am I understanding this right? The police "discovered" the crash as in no one else noticed??? How the heck does anyone miss THAT???? That must have created an amazing noise!
 @cm257n7 It's an interesting area... no bars or any type of nightlife in that area. It's fairly isolated, even just coming off I-5 until you hit 7th. Â
 @cm257n7 2:00 AM...dead around there at that time
Reading through these comments here, with a few exceptions it's like I'm reading what a bunch of kids are saying. Na, na, na , na, na. Hateful, spiteful, flat out mean kids.
If all of you who are judging have never made a bad choice in your entire lives and either had to deal with the consequences or said, "Thankfully I lived through that!", then I believe you are in the minority. People are impulsive and make bad choices, but they are not "bad". I am sure there are a lot of people in a great deal of pain over this. If you picture any one of those young people as your son or loved one, it gives you a different perspective.
 @Thunder Agreed.  Who among you with sons has not known them to drive WAY too fast despite your warnings?  All involved were/are young people.  The guy drove too fast negotiating a tight turn, with horrific results he will live with for the rest of his life, and a good part of it in prison.  Put away the pitchforks and torches.
@Thunder.......But I can turn your perspective right back around again when I realize that the dirtbags that drive like this all around us are endangering me and mine. Â
 @bagsofdirt My point exactly - if you read my post carefully, you'll see I am not taking the perspective of the driver who killed the passenger, nor anyone else specifically. And I do agree, that if my son was killed by the negligence of that driver, I too would be nearly deranged with anger and profound sadness. I am stating that there are real lives involved here and, as you have all proven, a personal perspective stops the sarcasm being mentioned below. It is interesting how all of you perceived my post, and thought I was talking about the driver...? Hmm...I can see what the focus is, and I get it, but that was not what I actually said or meant.
 @Thunder
 There's a big difference between showing compassion and making excuses and granting excessive leniency based on a close association with those involved. If this involved my kid, my wife and I would be leading the charge to hold them accountable not making excuses for their actions.
 @what? I am confused as to where you see that I would be lenient or that I made excuses. I said bad choices. Your reading into my statement does not mean that is what I said. I actually agree with you. Did I once say they should not be held accountable?
@Thunder  There are bad choices and then there are bad choices. Someone died here. The only people in great pain are his family and for what? So this driver could drive like a maniac?Â
BMW. The ultimate driving machine......when driven by the proper driver.

@Muk115Â Â Modern BMWs are boats.Â

Yo, Justice. I, for one, appreciate your urban translation abilities, but nothing can top June Cleaver's mad skills:

Â
StringerJoe, I have to give you props on this video. Mad skills at its best. Bagsofdirt needs to venture out more and sign up for June Cleaver's class on "how to get in where you fit in.".
If your friend should drive faster than safe speed, tell him / her to slow down immediately.  If you should enjoy such dangerous joy riding,  you might end up like the dead person in this story.Â
Doesn't surprise me much, 7-series BMWs tend to be popular with the "More money than sense" crowd...
Almost the same spot as this one:

 @StringerJoe Yep.  Taking exit ramps at freeway speeds is dangerous.  Pay attention to the signage people.
 @NWNative  @StringerJoe
 Darwin has asteep learning curve for idiots behind the wheel and those unfortunate enough to be nearby.
 @what? Fortunately for most of us, that steep curve takes out most of the idiots on the first try.
At least no innocents were killed or hurt..
 @Windowseat How do you know the passenger that died wasn't innocent?
@Ankle Biter @Windowseat because he made the choice.
 @Ankle Biter  @slappywag At that hour, ya think there's any possibility that alcohol was involved?  Nah............
@slappywag and when the thottle sticks, the drivers forget all about putting the car in neutral, or turning off the ignition, it's like there's nothing they can do but steer into their doom
 @slappywag
I find it interesting that these wrecks involving expensive BMW's with sticky throttles seem to always happen on the weekends between mid-night and 6AM.
@Windowseat @nunof uors: We all make choices in our lives. Some work out to be good, others, well ... . But there is no way you can convince me that he signed up to die in this car crash.
 @Ankle Biter And if it is determined that the accelerator stuck open, or other circumstances, then what? Computers aren't infallible. There are many stories about how the computer screwed up and caused a fatal wreck. The most recent in memory being 2009 that made national news where a CHP officer, his family, and his were killed in a loaner Lexus with the throttle stuck.
 @nunof uors  @Ankle  @Windowseat He made the choice of getting in a car with a crazy driver whom I'm sure will get charged with something here but the deceased here isn't guilty of anything except being stupid..which the last I check isn't a criminal offense. Sometimes I wish it were.
