Man, 75, killed while helping cut trees in Sumas

SUMAS, Wash. (AP) - A Whatcom County sheriff's spokesman says a 75-year-old man from the Everson, Wash., area was killed Thursday when he was hit by a falling tree.

Sgt. Steve Gatterman says the man had been volunteering his time to cut trees for a church camp east of Sumas.

Gatterman says another man was cutting down a tree when it split and fell, fatally striking the Everson man. He was dead at the scene.

The man was not immediately identified pending notification of relatives.
