22-year sentence for Spanaway child molester
Jeffrey R. Smiley
SPANAWAY, Wash. -- A man who molested a 7-year-old girl was sentenced to over 22 years in prison Friday in U.S. District Court.

Jeffrey R. Smiley will also have a lifetime of supervised release for federal charges of Aggravated Abuse of a Minor, said Emily Langlie with the U.S. Attorney's office. And as part of a plea agreement, Smiley is also pleading guilty in Pierce County Superior Court to two counts of child molestation involving another victim.

In July, 2009, the girl revealed that Smiley, now 37, had molested her in the woods of the Fort Lewis Military Reservation near Spanaway, according to federal agents.

Investigators searched the publicly-accessible woods, and at two locations found camera equipment, children's clothes, toys, mattresses and sexual paraphernalia.

Parked nearby was Smiley's car, inside which investigators found computer equipment containing images of child pornography, including images of the 7-year-old girl.

"These offenses are as bad as it gets," U.S. District Judge Ronald B. Leighton said during sentencing. "They are very disturbing. Unimaginable in many ways. The exploitation of these youngsters suggests that the defendant is dealing with demons which are far beyond his control which allow him to dehumanize children for his own pleasure. It's shocking behavior.”

Since 2006, Smiley was investigated three times for child molestation involving young girls. Charges in one case were pending when Smiley was arrested on the federal charge. Langlie says following Smiley's guilty plea in Pierce County, he will serve his state sentence concurrent with his long federal sentence.
