3 killed, 3 hurt in suspected DUI crash on Whidbey Island
WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash. - Three people were killed and three others injured in a head-on crash on State Route 20 on Friday night. One of the survivors was a pregnant woman.
State troopers said an SUV crossed the center line near Monkey Hill Road and hit an oncoming Subaru, head on, at about 8:52 p.m., not far from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.
The impact killed the male driver of the Subaru and injured his pregnant female passenger.
Three of the four people in the SUV were ejected, and two of them died. One man was killed instantly, and another man died on the way to the hospital. None were wearing seat belts, police said.
The victims have not been identified.
"I've been here since August of '96, and I haven't seen a wreck like this. I've seen significant damage ... but as far as injuries and loss of life, this is the biggest one I've seen since I've been here," said a trooper at the scene.
The SUV driver who caused the crash - a woman in her early 20s from Oak Harbor - survived the impact and could face vehicular homicide charges, state troopers said. Investigators believe alcohol or drugs were involved.
The three injured - the SUV driver, a woman SUV passenger and the pregnant woman in the Subaru - were all taken to Whidbey General Hospital.
Two of the injured were later taken to Harborview - one with head injuries and one with hip injuries.
Highway 20 was closed until after 2 a.m. while the accident scene was investigated and debris cleared from the roadway.
