Pregnant woman loses husband in crash
But she's also extremely proud and thankful for what he left behind.
"It's incredibly comforting to know that even though I won't be able to spend the rest of my life with my husband, I'll be able to spend the rest of my life with this baby," she said of her unborn child.
She says their life together was perfect, and it was about to get even better. Brian Wood was a bright, young video game designer who was famous in his field for a game called Company of Heroes.
Erin Wood was seven months pregnant with the couple's first child.
But on Friday night on Highway 20 just outside of Oak Harbor, everything changed forever.
"I do remember opening my eyes and seeing a car swerve in front of us, and backing away and (getting) in front of us again. And then it was total blackness," Erin Wood said. "And the next thing I remember is medical personnel talking to me and asking me questions to get me out of the vehicle."
Brian Wood died instantly.
Two Oak Harbor men in the backseat of the oncoming Chevy Blazer, Jacob Quistorf and Francis Malloy, were also killed.
Investigators said Jordyn Weichert, 21, was driving the Blazer, and had her passenger, Samantha Bowling, take the wheel while she put on a sweatshirt. Weichert is suspected of being under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident.
"I've been here since August of '96. I haven't seen a wreck like this," said Trooper Jason Longoria.
Erin Wood believes that her life and the life of her baby were saved because of one split-second act of love and bravery. Brian Wood turned the car and took the impact on his side.
"Just makes me very thankful," she said. "And he was the best husband, and a wonderful father. He was going to be just amazing. So, you know, it proved that with what he did in the final moment."
Erin Wood's life has been turned upside down. She'll get by, she says, by focusing on the greatest gift that her husband left behind.
"In two months, I have a job to do. I have a job to do now, which is to eat, and breathe, and sleep and take care of this little one until it wants to join our world," she said. "And so can't wait to meet this little person that we've created."
Erin Wood says for a time, she thought she would wake up and find out it was all a bad dream. She now realizes that won't happen.
The two other women who survived in the Blazer could face charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.
