TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - The Pierce County sheriff's department says a 19-year-old Spanaway man was killed Monday about 8:30 p.m. in what appears to be an impromptu street race at "extremely excessive speeds."

Sheriff spokesman Ed Troyer said the victim lost control of his car, went into a ditch, flipped several times and went through several trees. The teen's car stopped 100 yards from where he first left the road. Troyer called it "a horrific scene."

Investigators suspect the man was going two to three times the posted speed limit.

The Pierce County medical examiner's office has not released the victim's name.

Deputies have identified the driver who the 19-year-old man was racing against as a 20-year-old Spanaway resident who was interviewed and could face criminal charges.

The sheriff's department's investigation will be forwarded to prosecutors for possible charges.
